Description

Late 1920s, Paris. The tangible influence of African culture, which has become a part of France through centuries of colonialism, can be felt all around. In Bal d'Afrique, the achievements of the French avant-garde and the philosophy of life from the Black Land are confronted, laying the foundations for an incredible game of ingredients. The composition is extremely dynamic, yet unpredictable. Velvet oil surrounds a sparkling core, made up of neroli, dark vetiver, and cedarwood, while musk and amber smooth out sharp contours. Year of creation: 2009.

About the brand Byredo

Stockholm-based perfumery house, founded in 2006. Behind the global success and all the brand's creations stands founder and artistic director Ben Gorham. His multicultural background, bridging Canada, India and Sweden, is reflected in the unique character of Byredo perfumes.

"I am not a perfumer. I create a brief and show it to a professional scent creator. Images, film, poetry, music, words, objects, other scents - these are my inspirations... I have trained my nose. I had to learn a different language to communicate with perfumers, but over time I gained experience. From the very beginning, I have also been working with the same specialists. We understand each other perfectly" - says Gorham.

The brand also offers high-quality perfumed skincare products, as well as candles and home fragrances.

Opinions about Bal d'Afrique My friend described Bal d'Afrique as "a Parisian fruit stand of strange quality". To me, these perfumes are reminiscent of the intoxicatingly cool girl from high school who comes back from a cigarette and pretends she didn't smoke, using the most bewitching scent. This touch of risk is Byredo's strong point. Unisex beauty that smells both familiar and mysterious. Garcon's World Ben Gorham, founder and creative director of Byredo, told the brand's master perfumer, Jérôme Epinette, that he was thinking of a scent that would evoke the Paris fascination of the 1920s with African music and the American phenomenon of Josephine Baker. The result is both fresh and sensual. One may feel that the perfumes were created from fairytale flowers – in reality, it is jasmine and marigold, but in a way you have never smelled them before. Epinette added African bukko bush flowers and notes of bergamot, violet, and cyclamen. Chandler Burr, New York Times
