Perfume is a very personal matter. The same scent can delight one person and be virtually undetectable to another. For someone it may evoke the best moments of their life, while for another it may stir feelings of nostalgia or even trigger unpleasant memories.

How to choose a perfume?

Choosing a perfume at first may seem like a considerable undertaking. We assure you it is a very pleasant process, at the end of which an even nicer reward awaits. However, it's worth arming yourself with some knowledge to pick a perfume that will harmonize perfectly with you.

What should guide you when choosing a perfume? Check:

Start by understanding the fragrance pyramid

Perfectly chosen perfumes please you with their scent for many hours. They captivate you from the moment of spraying, and as you wear them you appreciate them even more.

All thanks to the fragrance pyramid. It is the way perfumes are composed and at the same time the key to understanding how scent compositions develop on your skin. It is used to describe perfumes (e.g., in online perfumeries), so it's worth getting to know this scheme better.

The pyramid consists of three layers that gradually reveal their aroma:

- Top notes. These are the first impression, the notes you smell immediately after spraying the perfume. They are fresh, light and usually evaporate quickly, lasting on the skin from several minutes to a few dozen minutes. Their job is to intrigue you, but remember that this is only the beginning. Typical top notes are citrus (orange, bergamot), mint, lavender or fruits.
- Heart notes. They develop after about 30 minutes and constitute the essence of the fragrance. They last for several hours and it is they who define the character of the perfume. These are often floral notes (rose, jasmine, violet), spicy (cinnamon, pepper) or fruity (peach, pear).
- Base notes. These are the most long-lasting scent notes, which develop last but can remain on the skin for the whole day. They are deep, warm scents that form the foundation of the composition and the background for the other accords. Most often you'll find woody accords (sandalwood, cedar), musk, amber or vanilla.

Remember that fragrance notes aren't limited to flowers or citrus

The world of perfume, especially niche scents, is extremely interesting and has a lot to offer. You don't have to rely only on the most popular combinations—allow yourself to explore the creators' imagination and be delighted by unexpected scent compositions.

Don't be afraid to experiment and open up to the perfumers' imagination. A combination that seems strange at first may turn out to be a perfect match.

You can try, for example, scents with leather, woody or even gourmand notes – inspired by desserts. The world of fragrances is full of creativity, and discovering something new can be a fascinating adventure.

Test the scents

To get to know a perfume well, you must give it time. This is possible only by testing individual compositions on your skin. Each fragrance will develop differently depending on the skin's pH and the natural oils your body produces.

That's why it's so important to test perfumes on your own skin, not just smell them straight from the bottle or on a tester strip. Remember that spraying a scent in a perfumery only gives a preliminary impression of the aroma.

It's best to spray the perfume on your wrist, then wait at least a few hours to see how the scent develops on your skin and how long it lasts. Don't rub your wrists after application, as you may disrupt the natural development of the fragrance.

Think of yourself first

To choose a perfume, listen primarily to yourself and your intuition. Remember that everyone can perceive scents completely differently. Perfumes have no gender or any other restrictions.

Also, don't be guided solely by others' opinions. Choose a scent that fits your personality and lifestyle and simply enjoy it.

Choosing perfume and skin pH

Perfumes can smell different on other people. This is influenced primarily by skin pH.

People with a more acidic pH may notice that scents develop on them more intensely and quickly, while those with a more alkaline pH may enjoy a subtler, longer-lasting aroma.

Remember that your skin is unique, so not every scent you like will smell the same on someone else.

Eau de Parfum or Eau de Toilette?

While searching for the perfect scent, you'll notice that some are labeled as eau de parfum, others as eau de toilette, and some as eau de cologne. The differences in these terms result from different concentrations of fragrance oils in the compositions. They do not affect the scent of the perfume.

- Eau de Parfum. They have a higher concentration of fragrance oils (around 15–20%), which makes them more intense and longer-lasting.
- Eau de Toilette. They contain 5–10% fragrance oils. They are less long-lasting than EDP, making them ideal companions for everyday wear.
- Eau de Cologne. The most delicate option, with only about 2–5% fragrance oils. Great as a subtle refreshment on hot days.

When choosing perfumes by this criterion, consider mainly your preferences, budget and the occasion.

Most popular fragrance notes

Perfume is more than an accessory – it's a way to express yourself and emphasize your personality. There are really many options available. Knowing the different fragrance families can help you find your favorite aroma.

Here is an overview of the most popular notes:

- Citrus scents. Fresh, light and invigorating. Dominated by notes of lemon, orange, bergamot or grapefruit – juicy and zesty. Imagine the scent of a ripe orange sprinkled with dew or the refreshing aroma of a freshly cut grapefruit
- Floral scents. Delicate and romantic. In these compositions you'll find aromas of rose, jasmine, tuberose, violets or lilies. Floral perfumes are full of notes that often recall the scent of a garden in full bloom. Their fragrance can be classic at its best, but also an expression of a unique artistic vision or even avant-garde—if you trust a niche perfumer's artistry.
- Amber scents. Warm, sensual and full of exotic spices. Here you'll find notes like cinnamon, vanilla, incense or musk. They are mysterious and attention-grabbing.
- Fruity scents. The essence of joy and energy. Notes of pear, peach, raspberry or apple create juicy and sweet compositions that evoke memories of warm days and carefree moments.
- Marine scents. Extremely clean, light and refreshing. They can smell like a sea breeze or a fresh mountain stream. They may also recall the scent of rain on a meadow or cool water gently caressing the skin.
- Woody notes. Imagine the scent of damp wood after rain or the aroma of a bonfire on a cool evening – these are some faces woody scents can wear. Sandalwood, cedar, patchouli or vetiver add longevity and character to perfumes.
- Leather notes. Ideal for those seeking originality. These are sophisticated scents, often reminiscent of the atmosphere of luxurious ateliers or the interior of a new car. These compositions have a distinctive character with a hint of rawness, making them unusual and elegant.
- Gourmand notes. Like an aromatic journey through a patisserie. They often feature vanilla, chocolate, caramel or almond notes that make perfumes seem almost edible.

Of course, most compositions are a blend of several fragrance families that perfectly permeate each other and create a harmonious whole. You can choose perfumes composed exclusively of your favorite notes or, for example, those that mean nothing to you at first.
