Description

In 1751, writer Henry Fielding declared that gin salons were undoubtedly breeding grounds for all kinds of vices and wickedness.

In an attempt to depict this public decline in morals, English artist William Hogarth created eight paintings between 1732 and 1734 depicting the moral downfall of Tom Rakewell (A Rake's Progress). In one of Hogarth's most famous canvases, the protagonist's corruption is shown through symbols of luxurious living, prostitutes, and gambling.

Inspired by these scenes of degeneration by Hogarth, the Beaufort brand attempts to recreate the spirit of Georgian London with their scent Rake & Ruin. This fragrance evokes an evening in a tavern, where gin flows freely and there is a sense that the good times have passed and only a precipice lies ahead.

This strong eau de parfum (with a 30% concentration of scent) contains botanical ingredients of the drinks that filled bar glasses, the dark wood floors on which they were spilled, and animalistic allusions to the depraved acts that took place between each serving.

About the brand Beaufort

The brand was created by musician and writer Leo Crabtree, who has been fascinated by scents and the dark side of British history throughout his life. These two currents are the driving force behind the entire collection. As he says: "The sea, its traditions and superstitions, and the associated lifestyle - all of this is a part of me. The name comes from the 1805 scale of wind strength and serves as a structure within which we try to express ourselves as a brand."

Beaufort fragrances are created in close collaboration with the most distinguished British perfumers and are meant to reflect the collective national subconscious. For example, Iron Duke was created in honor of Arthur Wellesley - the Duke of Wellington, a rider, soldier, politician, and avid lover of tailoring. It is built on notes of leather, tobacco, rum, and... gunpowder.
