How not to wash your hair

So a handful of valuable tips and matching products that we tested on our own skin — our heads, of course.

First of all, less often

Alina Szyrle-Kustosz, expert at Galilu: “Wash, wash, but not so often. Daily washing — not out of necessity, but out of habit, because we can’t imagine styling our hair otherwise — is overkill. You need to wash every day only when the scalp gets very oily. If you just want to refresh your hair, simply rinse it with clean water. Try to use shampoo every two or three days. Your scalp will thank you for it.”

Refreshing products between washes

Voluminous Dry Shampoo, Rahua, 175 zł

Nourishing dry shampoo with a good formulation — it contains a patented blend of botanical extracts, finely milled mineral clay, cassava starch and antiseptic anise and vanilla. It effectively lifts strands at the roots, doesn’t whiten, and is easy to distribute.

Dry Wash, London Labs Skincare for Hair, 114 zł

Besides refreshing and neutralizing excess sebum, it’s useful for styling — it prolongs the hold of a hairstyle without aggressively stiffening the hair.

Vinaigre de Toilette, diptyque, 259 zł

A multifunctional product for refreshing the whole body — from head to toe. It can be used between washes or right after washing (or rinsing with water alone) as a softening mist (rinse or leave on, depending on your needs).

Vinaigre de Toilette, Oriza L. Legrand, 330 zł

Also vinegar-based, it refreshes and softens. You can add a few drops to the water you use to rinse your hair — after drying they will be soft and shiny.

Voluminous Hair Spray, Rahua, 164 zł

Organic, completely alcohol-free (and free of other irritating substances) volumizing spray. Its unique texture remembers the shape of the hairstyle for the next day — even if you muss the hair, it returns to its original form. Useful when strands “lie flat,” look tired or unruly.

Less is better

Moderation also applies to the amount of product used. It’s better not to overdo shampoo and foam. Incidentally, it’s often by the intensity of foaming that you can recognize products that are most harmful to the scalp. Much better are mild, low-foaming cosmetics, for example those with panthenol, chamomile and bitter almond flower extracts, or jojoba oil. Little foam (or even none at all) does not mean the washing is ineffective.

Do not apply shampoo directly to the hair — dilute a small amount with water in your hands and only then begin the massage. Hairdressers also advise focusing on the scalp during washing — even very long hair does not need to drown in foam down to the ends (when rinsing, shampoo will cover and remove impurities from them anyway). So we should choose cleansers according to scalp type, not hair type.

Shampoos for sensitive scalps

Balancing Shampoo, Dr. Sturm, 265 zł

A gentle, fragrance-free shampoo that restores scalp balance. It soothes irritation, flaking and itching. An ideal choice for those with sensitive skin, even for people with atopic skin.

Baby Shampoo, Erbaviva, from 30 zł

A family shampoo — you can use it together with your child. Or without the child. Exceptionally gentle (suitable for newborns), organic, with a short ingredient list, scented with lavender and chamomile.

Refreshing and deep-cleansing shampoos

Refresh Purifying Shampoo, Virtue, 145 zł

Created for weekly “detox” of the hair. The formula contains the patented breakthrough protein Alpha Keratin 60ku®, so it not only thoroughly cleanses but also nourishes the hair cuticle and restores its health.

Peppermint Shampoo, Malin + Goetz, 129 zł

Designed for frequent use, it does not irritate or dry out the scalp, but pleasantly refreshes it. It has a cooling effect — especially appreciated in summer — thanks to the addition of mint extract.

Scalp Exfoliating Shampoo, Rahua, 205 zł

Two-in-one: a shampoo with a scrub. Don’t worry, the particles rinse out on their own (even with very dense hair), nothing settles on the scalp. It exfoliates dead skin, stimulates circulation, and supports the microbiome. We reach for it when we need deeper cleansing.

Shampoo, Aēsop, from 72 zł

A light daily shampoo suitable for all hair types. Pros: it doesn’t weigh hair down, leaves a long-lasting feeling of a fresh scalp, and smells beautifully of herbs.

 Moisturizing shampoos

Curl Shampoo, Virtue, from 85 zł

Theoretically for curly hair, in practice it simply moisturizes well for any hair. It regenerates, makes hair springy and fluffy, and makes it appear thicker and healthier.

Hydration Shampoo, Rahua, from 45 zł

Thick, creamy, with a texture reminiscent of a conditioner. It envelops hair, strengthens it, and adds vigor. It contains rare oils from the Amazon rainforest (from sustainable sources supporting local communities) as well as natural sugars that bind proteins, enabling hydration of the deepest layers of each hair shaft.

Scalp care products

Revitalising Scalp Mask, Omorovicza, 325 zł

An extremely efficient cleansing scalp mask to use directly before washing. It cools thanks to menthol and camphor, and energizes with its scent (mineral-eucalyptus). Additionally, it removes styling product residues, exfoliates dead skin, unblocks hair follicles, allowing them to grow freely.

Anti-Hair Fall Scalp Serum, Dr. Sturm, 429 zł

A product from a scientist’s clinic — an innovative scalp serum that prevents hair loss while also supporting the growth of new (stronger and more resilient) hair. It reduces breakage, nourishes follicles, and deeply conditions. And there is research to back it up!

Scalp Reviver, Omorovicza, 50 ml, 389 zł

Restores vitality between washes. It’s non-sticky, removes oiliness at the roots (silica), and gently exfoliates the skin (salicylic acid). The result? Regenerated skin (patented Healing Concentrate™ active delivery system), lighter and noticeably fresher strands.

Washing and what next?

After every wash apply a conditioner. The idea that it weighs the hairstyle down (unless we specifically want to “weigh down” curls) or accelerates hair greasing is another myth. You should choose it according to hair type and apply from about the top third of the hair length.

Smoothing conditioners

Smooth Conditioner, Virtue, from 89 zł

Conditioner, Aēsop, from 72 zł

Hinoki Conditioner, Le Labo, 130 zł

Moisturizing conditioners

Hydrating Conditioner, Dr. Sturm, 265 zł

Curl Conditioner, Virtue, from 89 zł

Hydration Conditioner, Rahua, from 47 zł

Strengthening conditioners

Flourish Conditioner, Virtue, from 89 zł

Once a week it’s worth applying a mask — it supplies nourishing and moisturizing ingredients that penetrate the hair structure and remain there until the next wash. Some masks can be left on the hair as a kind of “nurturing styling” (especially in summer they excellently protect against sun and seawater).

Repair Hair Mask, Dr. Barbara Sturm, 285 zł

A reparative mask developed for intensive, targeted care of dry, dehydrated and damaged hair. It contains, among other ingredients, cationic hyaluronic acid, organic shea butter, hemi-squalane, sunflower sprout extract and provitamin B5.

Honey Hair Cream Mask, Santa Maria Novella, 120 zł

A rich mask with the consistency of honey paste. It brilliantly nourishes hair, defines curl (for very curly hair you can skip rinsing and use it as a styler), adds shine and elasticity. It has a beautiful subtle rose and gardenia scent.

Hydration Hair Mask, Rahua, 225 zł

Moisturizes, reconstructs and tames coarse, curly, frizzy and damaged hair. It also smells beautifully of the tropics (you can briefly transport yourself to warmer corners of the world) thanks to juicy fruits: mango and passionfruit.

Omega 9 Hair Mask, Rahua, 219 zł

Acts like a strong salon-grade restorative treatment. It penetrates deeply into hair shafts and strengthens them from root to tip, making them strong, soft and shiny. The impressive formula includes, among others, ungurahua nut oil, rich in vitamin E and oleic acid, sunflower seed oil, and quinoa known among the ancient Incas as the “mother of all grains.” The soothing herbal scent comes from certified lavender and eucalyptus oils.

Hinoki Hair Mask, Le Labo, 170 zł

Has the consistency of a thick whipped butter, wonderfully weights hair down, smooths the cuticle and conditions. And it smells like the most beautiful perfume — warm, hypnotic hinoki wood, the Japanese cypress.
