What does liquid gold smell like, or what is oud?
Although known for hundreds, even thousands of years, oud is one of the most mysterious fragrance notes. Initially this unique ingredient was prized primarily in Arab culture, but today it attracts the interest of fragrance art lovers around the world.
It is a true treasure in the world of perfumery that primarily inspires creators of niche fragrances. It is one of the most expensive scents, enchanting with an absolutely unique aroma - not without reason it is sometimes called liquid gold. It fascinates with its richness, depth and intensity. Get to know it better.
What makes oud so special? What does it smell like? You will learn everything from the article below.
Oud - what is it and how is it made?
Oud is a resin derived from the agarwood tree, which grows mainly in Southeast Asia. However, it is not the average resinous scent that you might be familiar with or easily imagine.
Oud is formed in a very intriguing way.
The tree Aquilaria produces resin in response to a fungal attack, which is its natural defense mechanism. When it is damaged or infected, it begins to produce resin to protect itself from pests. This resin, after undergoing appropriate distillation processes, becomes oud oil used in perfume production. For this reason, oud is one of the most expensive perfumery ingredients in the world.
What does oud smell like?
Oud is a scent that escapes simple descriptions. It combines many notes, which means that everyone may perceive it slightly differently. Different ingredients in compositions can also accentuate its various characteristics. However, we will attempt to take on this challenge and describe this scent for you.
As you already know, oud is extremely precious — and the method of its production is quite unusual and certainly demanding. No one would go to such lengths if it weren't worth it. It is an extremely intense and strong scent.
It is dominated primarily by subtly sweet and woody accords. A characteristic smoky note can also be detected. People who describe it as balsamic, leathery or even slightly animalic will not be mistaken. Some describe the scent of oud as something between patchouli and sandalwood. But it's best to smell it yourself!
One of the most fascinating aspects of oud is its ability to evolve on the skin. The scent can change throughout the day, and some notes may dominate at different times of wear. It can last on the skin for up to 12 hours, making it one of the most long-lasting ingredients in perfumery.
Oud scent and origin
Oud is a fantastic perfume ingredient for many reasons. Its intensity and uniqueness are one thing. However, oud oil is also extremely diverse. Different production regions influence its aroma and offer a wide range of notes.
Here's how its scent can differ depending on the region of origin:
Indian oud. Indian oil is characterized by more intense animalic tones and a deep smoky aroma. It is earthy and extremely intense.
Cambodian oud. It usually has a more subtle character, with delicate floral notes detectable.
Bornean oud. Its scent bouquet is fresher than others. It often combines fruity accents with woody tones. It may somewhat resemble mint or incense.
Laotian oud. Compared to other varieties, Laotian oud tends to combine sweet, woody and balsamic tones.
Indonesian oud. It is mildly fruity. Its scent can be described as sweet and juicy, making it an interesting alternative to more classic oud versions.
What role does oud play in creating fragrances?
Oud can be used as a primary ingredient or as an accent in a fragrance composition. It can take on various facets – from sweet and floral, through woody, to intense and smoky accents. It blends excellently with other ingredients, revealing its different faces.
One of the most important roles of oud in perfumery is its ability to enhance the longevity of fragrances. Oud acts as a base note that helps keep other ingredients on the skin for longer. As a result, perfumes with oud are not only intense but also remain on the skin for many hours, even days.
Using oud at the center of a composition is of course entirely possible and desirable. However, even in the niche market, there are not many such perfumes. This is due, among other things, to the very high cost of obtaining this raw material.
All the more reason to appreciate those compositions that showcase oud as the main ingredient. They are absolutely exceptional, and you can find them at Galilu.
Fragrance compositions with oud in the lead role
Oud is a very precious and hard-to-acquire ingredient. Therefore, it is not among the most popular. You won't find it in compositions on the shelves of mainstream drugstores. It is a scent that requires extraordinary care, appropriate treatment and, above all, artistic vision.
Here are some interesting oud compositions we recommend:
The Night Frederica Malle
It is a perfumery masterpiece considered one of the strongest and most authentic oud fragrances. The composition combines the richness of oud with delicate notes of rose and spices, creating an extremely long-lasting and sensual effect that captures the spirit of night in the Middle East.
Indian oud plays the leading role here - it is part of the heart of the composition. The quantities present are virtually unseen in other perfumes, which very often contain only a trace of this ingredient.
Oud for Greatness od Initio Parfums Privé
It is an intense and mystical scent combining oud with lavender, patchouli, saffron and musk. Such a composition has
Oud Superfluide od Les Eaux Primordiales
In this composition, Laotian oud takes center stage, distinguished by a certain creaminess and a richness of sweeter notes compared, for example, to Indian oud.
Its character is emphasized by the freshness of bitter orange and guaiac wood, and the whole is also complemented by sesame, vanilla and benzoin.
The Oud Affair od Vilhelm Parfumerie
In this scent, oud appears in the base notes and complements the entire composition, giving it longevity and adding depth. The animalic aspect of oud is detectable here, but it is only an accent, complementing the exoticism, sweetness and simultaneous tartness of honey, ginger, tobacco and vanilla.
