April 1687, Orangery, Versailles. In the cathedral-like rooms of the Orangery, over a thousand Mediterranean trees find shelter. Created by the royal architect to impress the courtiers, the space filled with trees became a theatrical stage, providing entertainment for the Court. Inside, gardeners lit fires to warm the trees, so when the Sun King visited the Orangery, the strong scent of burning wood mixed with his beloved orange blossoms created a unique golden aura.
