Po powrocie do Francji odegrał kluczową rolę w wydarzeniach 1789 roku, współtworząc Deklarację Praw Człowieka i Obywatela oraz stając na czele Gwardii Narodowej.
Popiersie nawiązuje do słynnej rzeźby wykonanej w 1790 roku przez Jean-Antoine’a Houdona, ukazującej Lafayette’a u szczytu jego wpływów i znaczenia.
