Silphium (probably from the genus Ferula) was a plant that grew in the area of Cyrene, present-day Libya, and was widely known as a spice, medicinal herb, and ingredient in perfumes in ancient empires.
It was praised by Greek philosophers and writers, as well as Roman emperors and cookbook authors.
Many attempts were made to cultivate Silphium, but they always ended in failure. The plant only grew wild in a limited area on the northern coast of Africa. This, combined with its spice and medicinal properties, made Silphium the most valuable spice in the world, overshadowing both saffron and cinnamon. The demand for Silphium became so great that the plant was destroyed, and the taste and smell of what was once the most magnificent spice in the world were lost forever.
The interpretation of this historic plant was created through research on its presumed relatives, and using aromachemicals (molecular scent molecules) a chord was created that, according to the creators, represents how its scent was described in sources. The brand's creators placed it against the background of ancient incense, wood, and leather.

Stora Skuggan is an independent Stockholm-based olfactory studio, founded by five versatile creators. Since their debut in 2015, they have gained a reputation as a niche brand that reinterprets the art of perfume making. Their trademarks? Poetic storytelling, complexity and variability of scents (we strongly encourage testing on skin, not on blotters), packaging - small glass bottles topped with a large (almost as big as the bottle itself) spherical cap. What's more, each packaging stands out with unique, three-dimensional graphics.
And the scents themselves? One of a kind, abstract, intriguing, unconventional, mystical. Their creators do not impose interpretations, they do not tell you what to feel - after all, everyone feels differently.
