Orris root (Iris pallida), a variety of iris grown in Tuscany and southern France, is one of the most expensive materials on a perfumer's palette. Obtaining this precious absolute requires 5-6 years of patient waiting until the aromatic components develop in the collected rhizomes. The scent of iris, complex and delicate, is both floral, powdery, buttery, and reminiscent of violets.
