Promise by Dominique Ropion is a tribute to one of the strongest bonds between people: the commitment to keep one's word. During his travels in the Middle East, Frédéric discovered a rigorous code of honor that governs making promises to others. He strongly identifies with these principles and believes that keeping one's word and being able to rely on the word of others connects people all over the world. These principles are at the heart of Editions de Parfums fragrances. The promise that Frédéric made to perfumers, to guide them through the creative process and help them reach the heights of their abilities and talents, is a promise he still keeps today. Frédéric Malle and Dominique Ropion sealed their promise to each other and their required artistic standards with two precious varieties of rose: Bulgarian rose essence and Turkish rose absolute. This duo gains lightness from notes of apple, pink pepper, and clove, and sensuality from a base of patchouli, labdanum, and a large dose of ambroxan. This accord is invisible, yet indestructible, like a promise.

Frederic Malle's Promise is not meant for the mass market customer, and I suspect there will be more people who will hate it than love it because it's not what they expect. It's not Portrait of a Lady, it's not a sweet, shy rose. It's surprising, and I love to be surprised. But I warn you loyally, this scent may be unbearable for you. It's likely to be Promise. However, I will keep it and try to figure out if I can sneak up on it and start wearing it before it starts wearing me.
