Description

"Why be born a slave" is the title of a series of busts created around 1870 by the painter and sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875). At the height of his career, as a protege of Napoleon III, Carpeaux received a commission from the city of Paris to design the Fontaine de l'Observatoire. However, he slightly modified the imposed theme - the four corners of the world - by turning it into an allegorical, personified representation of Europe, Africa, Asia, and America. While working on the depiction of Africa, he came up with the idea of creating a bust of a captured, black woman - "Négresse Captive". Capturing the movement of the human body was his obsession, so he sculpted the slave at an angle that expressed rebellion. It is believed that the woman who posed for this bust may have also been the model for Charles Cordier when he created "Capresse des colonies" in 1861.

About the brand Trudon

A French family company from Normandy, producing candles since 1643. They supplied them to the French royal court and the most important churches in France. Marie Antoinette was a loyal customer of the company, and Napoleon gave his son a candle adorned with gold medallions with his likeness on the day of his birth...

In 2006, the forgotten company was taken over by Ramdane Touhami, a brilliant artist, entrepreneur, and creative director, and turned it into an undoubtedly cult brand. Their offer includes classic perfumes, home fragrances, accessories, and the most popular candles - made from natural waxes, placed in handcrafted glass vessels with a characteristic gold or silver emblem, with complex, elaborate, and long-lasting scents. Scents that linger long after they have been extinguished.
