More or less realistically (sometimes almost tangibly) they reflect scents we know well from nature — dry grass, the tart greenness of stems, damp soil, the air after rain, fruit picked straight from the branch. The compositions that inspired our selection for Earth Day recall the infinite beauty of the world, slowing us down and inviting a mindful look around.

LE LABO

The scent of earth after a heavy rain. In nature this phenomenon even has its own name — petrichor. To recreate it as faithfully as possible, the creators at Le Labo reached for, among other things, dried juniper berries and damp green leaves.

A slowly smoldering vetiver field. The wind carries clouds of smoke steeped in the scent of moss, galbanum, bitter orange, patchouli and lavender. A feast for the senses.

Inspired by abandoned, post-industrial spaces where nature reclaims the city. Here we have fresh notes of grapefruit, wildflowers — powdery, at times almost soapy — mosses and lichens, damp stones and a fresh gust of green, austere galbanum.

Imagine a scent so intoxicating that bees flock to it blindly, ready to lose themselves completely. It's the scent of linden blossom — the ripe, honeyed kind that heralds the harvest and soaks up every ray of sun. This is the promise of a dreamed summer: lush greenery, swollen buds, a full-breathed sigh, warmth after dusk, with calm and carefreeness in the background.

Rain Wood

Simply wood after the rains. Wood that had long been dry and scorched by the sun, until it suddenly encountered moisture. Honest, genuine, celebrating nature alongside elemi, angelica, frankincense, myrrh and a piercing pepper.

A scent you can fall head over heels for, and that instantly lifts the mood. Slightly sweet, light, bright, full of radiance. It feels as if you've buried your nose in a blooming orange tree.

Lilac. Nothing more, nothing less. Of course the composition is built from several notes, but the effect is strikingly realistic — flowering sprigs of white lilac carried by a warm breeze, lifting their heads to the sun.
