From bursting juice to balsamic resin. From smoky wood to sun-baked stone. From purple dusk to ink-black night. Grenadille d'Afrique pays tribute not only to ebony, from which it takes its name, but also to the original landscape of Africa.
"It's a surprising, uncompromising and emotional scent," explains perfumer Alberto Morillas. The materials are simple, raw and unprocessed. It is thanks to their density and simplicity that the scent becomes art."
It starts with the African ebony tree, a rare and expensive member of the sandalwood family, whose Latin name Dalbergia melanoxylon translates to "black wood." The name does not capture the full range of colors of this wood, also known as grenadilla, which ranges from deep purple to brown-black. The ancient Egyptians, who called it h'bny, used it to create valuable furniture. In Tanzania, members of the Makonde ethnic group, who know this tree as mpingo, use it to create spectacular, highly valued Tree of Life sculptures.
Morillas describes his creation as "petrified wood infused with a vanilla chord," a strongly contrasting composition that brightens its dark notes with more luminous ones. Grenadille d'Afrique uncovers a new region on the scent map, where forests and resins meet ink and stone.
Since 1995, an olfactory art gallery founded by perfume connoisseurs — Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl, an independent perfume brand since 2012. The first fragrance, Aedes de Venustas (Latin for "temple of beauty") Signature, was created in contrast to the traditional fragrance pyramid model — commonly accepted division into base, heart, and top notes was replaced with their own scheme.
The distinguishing note of all the brand's creations is incense — combined with extraordinary, rare, and often the most expensive ingredients in the world.
